The place
The official booklets describe the Sagrada Família crypt as the first part of the Temple built, 10 metres below ground. Francisco de Paula del Villar designed the crypt beneath the apse before Gaudí took over. Mass began in the Chapel of Saint Joseph before the crypt was finished.
The crypt has a semicircular floor plan measuring 30 by 40 metres beneath the apse. Five chapels line the straight side, with seven chapels around the curve of the crypt. The Chapel of Saint Joseph faces the altar.
Gaudí replaced the planned stairs with 2 spiral staircases, one on each side of the semicircular crypt. Gaudí dug out the ground around the outer crypt wall to reduce damp and allow daylight in from outside. The higher crypt vault made room for more windows.
The central crypt vault carries a coloured relief of the Annunciation by the sculptor Joan Flotats. The crypt floor mosaic shows grapes and vine leaves, with birds eating the fruit. Grapes symbolise the Eucharist in the crypt mosaic.

Gaudí’s tomb
The tomb of Gaudí is in the Chapel of Our Lady of Carmel, 10 metres below ground in the Sagrada Família crypt. The tomb of Gaudí lies on the straight side of the crypt. Gaudí was devoted to Our Lady of Carmel.
Gaudí worked on the Sagrada Família for 43 years, until his death. Gaudí died at the Hospital de la Santa Creu after being struck by a tram.
